I saw this on the "Friendly Atheist's" blog:

(Click here for a full-size PDF.)

This was a full-page ad printed in today's New York Times by the Freedom from Religion Foundation. As you might expect, I initially approved of the "message" when I saw the headline and photograph. But then I actually read the ad. It makes points I completely agree with about the separation of church and state, but it has the same snotty "we are superior" tone that Christian evangelicals have. It states: "One of the lessons of 9/11 is that there is no greater source of terrorism, strife, bloodshed, persecution or war than religion." (Technically, I think the root causes are greed, hate, delusion, and fear.) It continues, "The history of Western civilization shows that most social and moral progress has been brought about by persons free from religion," (their emphasis) including the abolition of slavery. Really? I need to see some sources on that. Are you sure the Quakers had nothing to do with it?

Let me explain why I disagree with the ad's assertions: All human beings are evil, whether or not they believe in God. It does not affect how violent an oppressor can be. Has any Christian or Muslim in history been responsible for as many human deaths as Joseph Stalin or Mao Zedong, each easily having murdered more people than Adolph Hitler (a Christian)? Are my fellow atheists really prepared to defend these guys? I don't care whether believers or un-believers killed more people--it's probably the same. Communism and Capitalism have killed similar numbers of people. Eastern civilization or Western civilization, I don't care. As the King of Brobdignag stated in Gulliver's Travels, human beings are "the most odious and pernicious vermin that nature ever suffered to crawl upon the face of the earth".

In a press release praising the ad, the American Humanist Association said, "People don't crash airliners into skyscrapers in the name of science..." You have got to be kidding me. How long of a list would you like of all of the contemptible, egregious tortures we have inflicted upon animals and human beings in the name of science? "Oh, but that wasn't 'true' science...." Yeah, and the Salem witch trials weren't held in the name of "true" Christianity, either. It's just human nature to inflict pain upon others, whether it be in the name of religious fanaticism, scientific curiosity, or just good old fashioned fun.

The title of the ad should have been: "Imagine a World Free from Humanity".

thank you for rocking my world with your rant just now.
*mental hi-five*

I'm just glad someone actually reads these posts! (My own girlfriend doesn't have the patience for them...)
::high five::
